Editor's Note
We're pleased to publish Issue 5 of Kikwetu, featuring an excerpt from Mukoma wa Ngugi’s forthcoming novel, due out later this year by Cassava Republic Press.
While putting this issue together, we debated whether to break from the norm and celebrate one author who is making a significant contribution to creative writing in East Africa. We agreed to feature Mukoma because of his contribution to the East African Literary scene as co-founder of the Mabati-Cornell Kiswahili Prize for African Literature. Mukoma is the author of The Rise of the African Novel: Politics of Language, Identity and Ownership, the novels Mrs. Shaw, Black Star Nairobi, Nairobi Heat, and two books of poetry, Logotherapy and Hurling Words at Consciousness.
Starting this year, we plan to host readings, writing workshops and writing contests for creative writers. We would like to thank our readers for trusting us to present engaging and relevant writing with every issue we put out into the world.
